I got a question:
I am going to visit moscow in january. I’d like to buy a prepaid mobile phone by the provider mobilfon with a simk.
Actually, I don’t know Mobilfon as a provider in Moscow. There are three major mobile network providers here: MTS, BeeLine, and Megafon. The primary mobile phone standard is like in Europe GSM-900 and GSM-1800. Prices, coverage, and services offered by the operators are quite similar. I use MTS.
MTS : http://www.vis.mtsgsm.com/tariffs/
Beeline: www.beeline.ru
Megafon : www.megafon.ru
If you would like to save money, you can buy a local SIM card for about $10 US and you will have a Russian mobile number with a prepaid network time. Be sure your phone is not “locked” by your provider and you can use it with any operator. In any case you can purchase an inexpensive phone for 1500 rubles ($50). Don’t forget your passport.
To sign up for MTS, go to their central office: Malaya Dmitrovka 5, Metro Pushkinskaya or any other from this list: http://www.mts.ru/help/service_abonents/shopslist/
